Negrao stepping out of Piquet's shadow

Negrao stepping out of Piquet's shadow

13 April 2007

Alexandre Negrao has shown signs that he can fill the void left by Nelson Piquet jr. with his brilliant qualifying run to second place. He has a tough act to follow in Piquet who challenged Lewis Hamilton last season for the title but young 'Xandi' is revelling in the limelight at Minardi Piquet Sports.

"I think it was a surprise for everybody, even for me!" Negrao said of his qualifying performance.

"After the winter times we knew that sometimes we were quick, sometimes we were a bit off, but I knew if we would arrive here with a good set up, we could have a good position and a good feeling, and now we've done it! Of course the race is the important thing, but to start on the first row is a good feeling for me - I'm really, really happy, and looking forward to tomorrow.

"I think I've shown already my pace, that I am as quick as the guys in front or maybe quicker, so for tomorrow I am confident that we can do well.

"For sure Nelson was really important for me, and I learnt a lot from him over the last few years here for a few years and in Brazil four years ago, and I'm still learning. I'm missing him as a teammate, because he is really quick and good to compare yourself to. When he left, I'm not saying they didn't concentrate on me before, but now there is no doubt - now they keep the focus on me, and I really like it."
