Luca Filippi surprised the GP2 paddock during the opening round at Bahrain with a pole, a victory and a third place in the sprint race today. The Italian almost looked like he might pull off a double victory when he got ahead of his two biggest rivals from the first race, Andreas Zuber and Timo Glock. Unfortunately the Super Nova driver could not maintain the momentum, but the result confirms him as the championship leader when the series returns to Europe next month in Barcelona.
"I had a very good start and I was already in front of the two iSport cars, which was my goal for the first corner," the 21-year-old said.
"So that was very good and I was third, and then after the second safety car I overtook Garcia at the end of the straight, and that was nice because I was quite fast and I could push on the brakes, so that was nice, it was good. But we just had a drop on the rear tyres later in the race so I wasn't able to fight for the victory, but I am very happy, very pleased.
"It was a great weekend, and I don't think anyone in the paddock expected this type of weekend for me! It was very important also because our pace was consistent with the first two in this race," he added.
