Senna takes maiden victory at Barcelona
12 May 2007 / Results / PhotosBruno Senna took his maiden GP2 victory in only his third ever race in the series at Barcelona this afternoon. The Brazilian drove a clean race from start to finish and took advantage of a safety car period perfectly to come out on top.
Timo Glock was the fastest driver on track, but he lost team mate Zuber at the start of the race when his gearbox broke. Glock therefore had no protection but retained the lead at the start but behind him was carnage.
Chandhok spun on the approach to the first corner colliding with Conway, Pantano and Filippi. Conway was the only one to emerge in tact but made it only to the next corner when he was hit by Pizzonia while rejoining the race. The safety car was deployed to enable marshals to clean up the track and at that point most of the field jumped into the pit lane for their compulsory stops. Glock did not take advantage and would end up slipping way back as a result.
The race resumed on lap five with Senna leading those who had stoped. Glock drove hard and eventually pitted on lap 27, but could not make up enough of a gap to rejoin ahead of Senna. Glock did recover to second on fresh tyres but Senna kept his cool to take his first win.
