After a strong start on Thursday Pastor Maldonado grabbed pole position on Friday morning in Monaco for Saturday's Monaco Grand Prix in the GP2 series. Maldonado dominated most of the qualifying session and set his fastest time at 1.20.820.

At ART Grand Prix Ammermuller's replacement Sebastien Buemi did well. In his first qualifying session in GP2 Buemi qualified himself in fourth position. A good position for the Swiss F3 Euroseries driver to score points on Saturday. He kept his teammate Lucas di Grassi behind him. Di Grassi will start Saturday's race from fifth position.

Luca Filippi suffered from an engine failure at the end of the qualifying session. The Italian blew his engine at the exit of the tunnel and left a lot of oil in the chicane.
