Senna unhappy with Monaco result
26 May 2007 / Results / PhotosBruno Senna finished 11th today in Monaco at the 45-lap GP2 race. He suffered with extreme tyre degradation in a race that was largely decided on strategy after two safety car periods. However, Bruno did mark himself out from the crowd by making a stunning overtaking manoeuvre past Kohei Hirate on lap 36 of the race - the only real pass of the race.
Starting ninth after struggling to find a set-up to suit the unique Monaco street circuit, Bruno moved up to eighth at the start after Andreas Zuber stalled. He had a consistent first stint, and led the race briefly during the pitstop period. However, with the team opting for a fairly late pitstop on lap 19, Bruno emerged in 15th position, with three cars ahead remaining to pit. When the pitstop round had finished, Bruno found himself in 13th, and then up to 12th when DPR's Christian Bakkerud retired. Following a second safety car period, Bruno made the move of the race by overtaking Trident's Kohei Hirate and taking 11th spot, where he remained until the chequered flag.
Bruno Senna said about his race: "Today was not a good result but we had very bad rear tyre degradation and I just couldn't push any harder. I just didn't have any pace, and the lap times were the best that I could do. Strategy here is tricky and I stopped late to try to avoid getting stuck behind slow cars that were then difficult to overtake. It's frustrating because it's so hard here to make the right call, but you can't win every race and we made the right call in Barcelona.
"Fortunately this weekend is only one race, so I only lost points for one race, not two, so that's a positive on the bad result. With my overtake on Hirate, I was a lot faster than him so I was pushing him into making mistakes. I already nudged him on the hairpin because he was very slow, so on that lap I went on the inside, he lost momentum and I went past him. He did try to get back on the line but I wouldn't let him and squeezed him a bit. It's great because it's the only time I could use the road like that in Monaco and not get stopped by the police!"
