Conway bounces back with fastest lap

Mike Conway added to his points tally in the 2007 GP2 Series despite being left behind at the startline when he stalled his Super Nova International car.

Conway had to wait for marshals to push his stranded machine into the pitlane, where his mechanics re-fired the engine. Despite being a lap down, and with no chance of getting into the top eight finishing positions, Conway made a second pitstop for fresh tyres and set his sights on recording the race's fastest lap - a mission he achieved with a blinding laptime that no-one else could match.

Sadly, his start did not work out as planned. As he prepared for the red lights to go out, he didn't get his start procedure right and the engine stalled. Fortunately, those behind him managed to miss his stationary car and Conway was pushed into the pitlane, where his car could be restarted.

"I just stalled, not enough revs, so my fault I'm afraid," said Conway. "The marshals aren't allowed to push-start you off the grid any more, so I had to wait to be pushed into the pits."

That meant he rejoined a lap behind his rivals, but he was right back in the thick of the action. He spent much of the race around his fellow Briton Adam Carroll, who won the last race at Silverstone.

"I didn't want to ruin Adam's race by getting in his way, but I was much quicker than him," said Conway. "I waited until I could see that the car in front of him was far away, so I wasn't going to mess-up his race, and made an easy passing move on him."

Conway's pace was then compromised when he flat-spotted his right-front tyre by locking up at the Dunlop hairpin, so he opted to come into the pits for a second time to bolt on fresh rubber to have a crack at the point for fastest lap.

"The car felt nice, so I went for it and banged in fastest lap," said Conway. "It was a nice feeling to achieve that, and showed that I had the pace to be right into the top five runners. I definitely had better pace than a lot of the cars I had around me on track. Although I'm starting from quite far back tomorrow, it gives me even more motivation to carve my way through."
