Conway enjoys charge to eighth

Mike Conway produced one of the drives of the day in Sunday's GP2 Series sprint race for Super Nova International at the Hungaroring to finish eighth from 23rd on the grid.

The reigning British Formula 3 champion put the disappointments of qualifying and the feature race behind him, and belied his lack of track knowledge to carve his way through the field.

"I'm happy with that," beamed Conway. "From dead last on the grid, at a track where overtaking is supposed to be almost impossible, it was very satisfying to come away with a top eight result."

The Honda F1 test driver made inroads right from the start, ending a sequence of problems getting off the line with a flying getaway.

"It was a really good start, no clutch problems or revs dying on me this time, and I cut past a lot of people going around the outside of Turn 1," said Conway. "After yesterday, I was very careful at Turn 2, and stuck to the inside, but made sure nobody got past me."

As the race wound down, some attrition ahead helped Conway move up the order. By the final lap he was on the tail of Giorgio Pantano, but ran out of laps to find a way past.

"I was catching the group ahead at the end, but just wasn't close enough to do anything about them," said Conway. "This result is a good way to repay the team after a bad weekend. They worked all night to fix my team-mate Luca Filippi's car after his huge crash yesterday. I'm pleased for them that we both drove to the finish today."

The next GP2 round is at the Turkish Grand Prix weekend in Istanbul on August 25/26. Conway said: "We need to get back on track in Turkey and start scoring points again. It's another new track for me, so I'd like to get some experience there before the race weekend. That's what this weekend proved; when it's a difficult track to drive, experience counts for a lot. I'm going to give a big push for Istanbul."
