Di Grassi takes Turkish victory

Di Grassi takes Turkish victory

Lucas di Grassi won today's feature race at Istanbul after iSport drivers Timo Glock and Andreas Zuber squandered their respective chances to clinch victory. Giorgio Pantano came in second and Adam Carroll just managed to fend off Glock for the final spot on the podium. The result puts di Grassi in the lead of the drivers' championship.

Borja Garcia and Kazuki Nakajima came fifth and sixth with Alex Negrao, Karun Chandhok, Ho-Pin Tung and Bruno Senna completing the top ten. Local boy Jason Tahnici finished 14th.

Zuber flew off at the start from the second row to seize the lead off a dumb-founded Luca Filippi. The Italian then spun on the first lap trying to chase the iSport car and ended up stalling. Meanwhile Mike Conway spun on the first corner collecting Adrian Soucek and Adrian Zaugg as they passed. The safety car was then called out and most of the field pitted except unbelievably Timo Glock. The German emerged in the lead but would still have to make his one mandatory pit-stop whilst everyone else had already done so. Furthermore Glock struggled to open up a gap over the group behind, which was led by the two Minardi Piquets of Alex Negrao and Roldan Rodriguez, who also still needed to stop - making Zuber the virtual leader in fourth.

Midway through the race Glock was picking up speed and had carved out a lead of over four seconds. However, that was still not enough and Zuber looked to have the win in the bag until a moment of madness ended the Austrian's hopes. Whilst shimmying all over the back of Rodriguez, Zuber ducked and then over did the dive, losing control and launching the car into the gravel. A frustrated Zuber frantically waved the marshals to dig him out but his race was over.

With six laps remaining, Rodriguez pealed into the pits having done Glock a favour by holding up title rival di Grassi as well as Carroll and Pantano. Glock pitted a lap later and rejoined in fourth - not a bad effort after the disastrous tactics at the start. On the ensuing laps, Pantano was jostling with Carroll for second - the Italian finally getting the better of the Ulsterman. Then on the final lap Glock was right behind Carroll after lapping four seconds quicker on the penultimate lap. Carroll looked to have lost his podium place when he locked up with just a few corners remaining but collected himself to secure third. Karun Chandhok finished eighth and so well start from pole position for tomorrow's sprint race alongside Alex Negrao.
