Conway pushed out of the race

British single-seater star Mike Conway suffered another character-building experience in his first season in the GP2 Series at Istanbul when he was punted off by another car on the opening lap of Sunday's sprint race.

Conway started down in 22nd position on the grid following his early exit from Saturday's sprint race, but was determined to charge his way to the front. The race started well enough, Mike picking up many positions, but then one of the drivers he'd already passed, Kohei Hirate, charged into the back of his car under braking, taking Mike out of the race.

"He just fired me off," said an angry Mike. "I made a good start and made up five or six places over the first few corners. I braked later than Sebastien Buemi into Turn 7, and was just in the process of passing him when I felt a huge bang from behind. "He spun me around and then hit me again, which bent the suspension so I couldn't continue. That was it, race finished because of someone else's mistake."

Following the disappointment of Istanbul, Mike has now set his sights on a strong end to the season. "Unlike here, the next three rounds are at circuits I know," said Mike. "They should all be good for me and the team, and I feel I've got nothing to lose now."

The GP2 series is the final stepping stone on a drivers path to Formula One, and with the races taking place at the Grands Prix, is a showcase of their talents in front of their peers and the F1 paddock. Conway is reigning British F3 champion and graduated to the GP2 series for this season.
