Season best qualifying for Senna
14 September 2007 / Results / PhotosBruno Senna sent a warning signal to his competitors today by putting in a strong performance on the opening day of the GP2 weekend at the Spa Francorchamps circuit in Belgium. After topping the timesheets in the morning free practice session, the 23-year-old put in a great lap early on in qualifying to secure third place on the grid for tomorrow's feature race, his equal best position of the season to match his result from Magny Cours.

Bruno got off to a fantastic start at in free practice this morning at the newly renovated Spa Francorchamps circuit. The Brazilian, who has some experience of the track thanks to his participation in Formula Three last year, put his Arden International car at the top of the timesheets as the half-way point of thirty minute session. No-one could beat his time for the remainder of practice with his nearest competitor, Italian Luca Filippi, more than half a second away.
In qualifying Bruno was immediately on the pace, setting a lap time of 1:57.106 nine minutes into the session, which put him in P2. Three minutes later, he had an unfortunate spin the last sector, and a stall forced him to cut his qualifying short. An excellent lap by Nicolas Lapierre to put the Frenchman on pole demoted Bruno to third, however, his earlier lap had been good enough to hold off a late flurry of activity at the top of the table and hold onto third place until the chequered flag.
Bruno Senna: "I'm happy that we've had a good start to the weekend. It's great to be quick and back on form and I'm really looking forward to tomorrow's race. However, it's disappointing to know that I couldn't do another lap on new tyres because of a mistake. I actually kept the engine running after the stall, but as I tried to drive off the anti-stall kicked in and that was that. If I had the opportunity to use my second set of new tyres I have no doubt that we would have been pole position. Spa is my favourite circuit in Europe by a mile. I've done well here in the past, but I haven't had a win yet so let's see, we should be quite fast tomorrow."
