Bruno Senna's GP2 feature race came to a shattering end today on lap 12 of 26 this afternoon when he crashed into the tyre barrier after pushing hard to make up time following a stall on the start grid.
After a very strong performance in yesterday's qualifying, Bruno lined up on the second row of the grid at the start of today's race. He suffered an unfortunate stall on the grid, and then a lengthy delay waiting for the marshals to push his Arden International car into the pitlane for a restart.
This pushed him down to 22nd, and from then on it was a fight to make up time, with the Brazilian focusing on a new challenge to set the fastest lap. On lap 12, Bruno was pushing hard on a clear track when he suffered oversteer on a camber change, sending him into the gravel and then the tyre wall.
It is a real disappointment for the 23-year-old who had, up until that point, had an extremely strong weekend. He will not start towards the back of the grid for tomorrow morning's sprint race.
Bruno Senna: "It's really frustrating to be fast and not finish the race. God knows what happened at the start because I have no idea why the car stalled. For some reason it took them ages to open the gates and push my car into the pitlane, and the race was gone then. I just went out after that to try and get the fastest lap. It's just the kind of race where there was nothing I could do, I was just at the back trying to make up ground. When I had the accident, I was just trying too hard. The tyres had gone away really badly but I was still pushing for a lap time. I got a bit of oversteer and then the camber changed. I just lost it and went into the gravel. Then I went into the tyre barrier, I didn't hit it hard, but that was the end. That's all I can say really."
