David Price welcomes first points
15 September 2007David Price Racing (DPR) finally scored championship points in the GP2 Series, with driver Andy Soucek taking sixth place in today's Feature race. The popular Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Spa, Belgium plays host to the tenth round of this year's GP2 Series and it produced the best result of the season for the Surrey race team.
Christian Bakkerud, returning after an absence at last weekend's race weekend due to a back injury, posted a strong 12th place finish.
The start produced the first drama of the race with three cars stalling, testing the quick reactions of the GP2 grid. Both Soucek and Bakkerud were able to avoid the cars and in the melee through the first few corners were able to improve on their starting slots to emerge in 11th and 14th place respectively at the end of the opening lap.
The mandatory tyre change pit stop was taken on lap three for Soucek and after quick work by the DPR crew he rejoined the race. The team opted to leave Bakkerud out until later in the race, and the Dane was leading the Spa race before pitting on lap x. With all the cars having pitted, at half distance Soucek was lying in ninth place and Bakkerud in 14th position. Soucek then improved to eighth and as the race reached the closing stages, he inherited seventh place with Adam Carroll spinning out ahead of him. He then passed Karun Chandhok for sixth place.
Bakkerud ran well, although his race was compromised by an over-ambitious move on him by Roldan Rodriguez, who careered into the Dane pushing him off track and losing him position. He regained ground and during the latter stages was battling hard for 13th place with Adrian Zaugg. The two drivers were playing cat and mouse in the final three laps with the Danish driver finally making a clean overtaking manoeuvre on his rival at the famous 'Bus Stop' chicane section of the track.
Soucek took the chequered flag in sixth place, his best finish position of the ten rounds so far, and taking the first points this season for himself and the team. The reversed grid for the top eight finishers will also give Soucek his best start position, with third place on the grid for tomorrow's Sprint race.
David Price, Team Principal, David Price Racing, expressed his delight, saying "We finally broke our duck today, so there's an element of celebration in the team. It's been a long time coming but finally we've got points on the board, and not just one point, it's three. Andy drove exceptionally well today, really putting the power down right from the off. He was the fastest man on the track on the second lap, so he definitely had the bit between his teeth today."
