Disappointing end to Spa weekend for Bakkerud

Disappointing end to Spa weekend for Bakkerud

16 September 2007

Starting from the 6th row of the grid in today's 18 lap sprint race, Danish racer Christian Bakkerud was unfortunately unable to build upon his good results from yesterday's feature race. On the run down to the first corner fellow GP2 racer Markus Niemela knocked Adrian Zaugg who in turn rammed Christian's car damaging the Danes rear end. As a result Christian lost the places he had made up and he was left struggling with the handling of his car. On lap 12 the car became completely un-drivable and he spun ending his race.

Christian comments from Belgium - "I made a good start today moving up from 12th place to 9th but coming into the first corner, La Source, Zaugg who was pushed by Niemela ran into my rear damaging something. I then had to run wide to avoid the mid field crash and with all this going on I unfortunately lost the 9th position that I had gained in the run up to the first corner. Coming out of La Source on my run down to Eau Rouge I was down to 15th place. The damage to the rear was noticeable straight away and I was really struggling especially turning right. The problem kept getting worse and worse and on lap twelve I lost all rear grip in the second sector and I spun ending my race.

"Of course it's a very disappointing result as I from a decent starting position immediately moved up 3 places and felt really fired up. On the positive side, my back feels completely recovered now and I know I have got the pace looking at yesterday's performance. So I guess I take away something positive from this weekend and I'm now looking forward to the final race at Valencia in two weeks time and hopefully some really good results to finish the season on a high.

"I would also like to say congratulations to my team mate Andy Soucek who came second today. A really wonderful and well deserved result for the team!"
