Senna hoped for more

Senna hoped for more

25 January 2008

Bruno Senna has finished the first ever GP2 Asia race on the podium in second position as he took up his new position as an iSport International driver for the race at the Dubai Autodrome.

Following four encouraging pre-season testing days, Bruno hit the track today for GP2 Asia's momentous first day in Dubai. Proving himself as surely one of the championship favourites, Bruno set himself up for a strong debut feature race by qualifying in an impressive second place, just five hundredths of a second behind the ART Grand Prix car of Romain Grosjean.

In the 42-lap race, Bruno converted that strong qualifying position into an equally impressive race performance. He lost time at the start due to beginning on the dirty side of the track, and DPR's Andy Soucek snatched second. However, Bruno kept on his tail for the whole race and was able to regain his position when Soucek's tyres began to wear, overtaking on the outside of the hairpin. Two laps before the end the Brazilian set the fastest lap of the race, and passed the chequered flag in second position.

The result demonstrates a solid start to his relationship with his new iSport team, and puts him in second position in the championship. He will begin tomorrow's shorter race from seventh due to the reverse grid set-up and is looking to strengthen his championship position.

Bruno Senna said about his race: "I started on the dirty side which gave Grosjean and Soucek the advantage but once the race got going my pace was there. I was faster than Soucek but he was quick on the straights so I just took it easy, knowing I could take advantage when his tyres wore off, which they did a few laps before the end.

"I'm a bit disappointed not to get the victory but it's still a good start to the season. The track is improving as the weekend goes on and as it's becoming more of a challenge I'm enjoying it more. I'll start seventh for the race tomorrow, so there will be the usual problems of the reverse grid but I hope to have an even better result than today."
