After Friday's qualifying and first race disappointments, Christian Bakkerud started Saturday's sprint race from the back of the grid and had to pull out all the stops and as a result managed a decent 11th position finish and only 3.5 seconds behind 8th place and a chance of scoring the final point.
Commenting from Dubai, Christian said - "Starting from the back of the grid is of course a clear disadvantage but I'm good at starts and also you have a good over-view of the grid and can stay out of the first lap tangles if you use your head. I was up to 15th position after only one lap. Then after a safety car period I managed to grab a few more places to finish 11th. "
"My team have given me a really well balanced and quick car and my lap times proved this as I was doing the same lap times as the top five runners ahead of me despite the fact that I was using up my tyres quicker by not running in clean air and overtaking and attacking. So I guess I'm quite pleased but I definitely need to work on my qualifying to avoid starting mid-field and getting tangled up in the mid-field scuffles. "
The GP2 Asia series now travels to the Sentul Circuit in Indonesia for the second round on the 15th and 16th of February.
