Bruno Senna collected one championship point today after he set the fastest lap in the second race of the GP2 Asia Series weekend at the Sepang Circuit in Malaysia. He also made up eleven positions in the 22-lap race, finishing eighth after a 19th place grid start.
After his retirement from yesterday's feature race after five laps, Bruno began today's shorter race from 19th on the grid. With D'Ambrosia starting from the pits, he was already up to 18th and gained another three places on the start to sit in 15th by the first corner. He passed Tung later in the lap to gain another position and overtook Nunes a lap later for 13th. On lap four he gained three places when Pavtovic spun, Buemi pitted and Schleghelmilch retired and then began in pursuit of ninth-placed Filippi.
He passed the Italian on lap ten but lost the position back four laps later when he attempted to overtake Puglisi. By lap 18 he had passed both Filippi and Puglisi for eighth position and crossed the finish line in that position. He showed his pace in the closing stages of the race in clear air, setting the fastest lap with a time of 1:46.548 on lap 20.
Bruno is now fourth in the championship with 18 points, five points adrift of Fairuz Fauzy. Romain Grosjean remains in the lead with 35 points, and Vitaly Petrov is now second on 24 points. The action will resume in a fortnight's time when the GP2 Asia Series moves to Bahrain for rounds seven and eight of the ten-round championship
Bruno Senna: "I made some good passes today and it was good to see we had the pace again, having recorded the fastest lap. However, it's obviously disappointing not to have got more points out of this weekend as we have slipped a little in the championship. Our aim for the next event will be to score high to gain back some positions ahead of the final weekend in Dubai."
