Racing Engineering driver Giorgio Pantano has won the first race in Turkey well ahead of Romain Grosjean. Pantano would have finished well ahead of Grosjean if it wasn't for the safety car to close the gap between the two. Andreas Zuber claimed third place in Turkey.
After the many penalties given on Friday afternoon the drivers were mixed at the back of the field but they all managed to make it to turn one without any problems. Alvaro Parente and Adam Carroll had to start their race from the pitlane as they both stalled their engine before the warm up lap.
Starting from pole position Giorgio Pantano enjoyed a clean start. The Italian dominated the race on Saturday afternoon and was never seriously attacked. Romain Grosjean grabbed second place at the start and was soon followed by Andreas Zuber. Both Grosjean and Zuber raced from start to finish in second and third.
There was not much overtaking in Race 1 at Istanbul Park. With just ten laps to go the safety car came out as Alberto Valerio spun his car and stalled his engine. The Brazilian spun his Durango car various time during the race but his race was over when he stalled the engine and had to be pushed away by marshals. The safety car destroyed Pantano's eight second lead ahead of Grosjean but Pantano had a clean re-start and claimed his first victory of the season.
