Hulkenberg enjoys first victory in GP2

14 February 2009

Nico Hulkenberg looks like the man to beat for the GP2 main series later this year. Having competed in just two race weekends the German scored both pole positions and won his first race on Friday. Hulkenberg was obviously extremely pleased scoring the maximum number of points so far in Qatar.

The race in Qatar was the first race for the GP2 series at night it made Hulkenberg's victory even more special. "Winning always feels great," he said after the race. "This is only my second race weekend in GP2 Asia. It's not bad I think. It was quite a great race for me..."

Hulkenberg was one of the very last drivers to pit in Friday evening's race. When asked if this strategy was planned he answered: "To be honest, I was also a bit confused with what was going on because the radio communications with my team was very bad. I kept asking them but I didn't get a clear answer because the transmission was very bad. So I trusted them. They said "stay out on the circuit and push as hard as you can". That's what I did. We came to the pitstop and we had a great one. It was five laps before the end I think. From there on it was done."
