Villa on top of final day in Spain

25 March 2009 / Results

Javier Villa has finished at the top of the classification on the final day of running at the Circuit de Catalunya. The Spaniard's best lap of 1.26.696 topped the timesheets as his Super Nova finished less than a tenth of a second ahead of Alvaro Parente and Lucas Di Grassi, fastest on Monday and Tuesday respectively.

The drivers' fastest times all came during the morning session, with cooler track temperatures than in the afternoon following the two hour break. "Everything went really well," third placed Di Grassi said. "We did some race simulations and I am very happy with the results we have achieved; we had no mechanical problems over the three days so I am very happy with the car's reliability."

Behind the Ocean Racing and Racing Engineering cars was the second Super Nova of Luca Filippi, just two tenths of a second slow than Villa on a positive day for the team. Romain Grojean rounded out the top five for Addax which was a fine example of the competitiveness of GP2 in 2009, with four teams filling the first five places. In sixth position was the second Spaniard with Roldan Rodriguez in the Piquet car ahead of Dutchman Giedo van der Garde, who enjoyed another satisfactory day's running for iSport.

Kamui Kobayashi, current leader of the GP2 Asia Series, was eighth in the DAMS ahead of Perez's Arden and Ambrosio, team-mate to Kobayashi, who completed the highest number of laps with 76 under his belt.

Today saw the conclusion of the Barcelona test, the venue hosting the first race of the season on 9-10 May. Before that, however, the penultimate races of the Asia Series will be taking place on Malaysian Grand Prix weekend, two weekends away on 5 April.
