Romain Grosjean topped the first practice session of the 2009 season in Spain as the Campos driver headed a one-two in Barcelona from team-mate Vitaly Petrov. The two cars finished comfortably ahead of Mortara's Arden entry, although Asia Series Champion Kobayashi completed just one lap before being hampered by mechanical difficulties.
In warm and calm conditions in Catalonia, Frenchman and Renault F1 reserve driver Grosjean headed the classification with a lap time of 1.27.638, beating his team-mate by over six tenths of a second. In fourth position was Lucas di Grassi, one of the title favourites, with Pastor Maldonado's ART car rounding out the top five.
It was not all good news for fastest man Grosjean, however, as a technical problem resulted in him stopping on track late in the session. Kobayashi's day couldn't have begun in a worse way as the Japanese driver both failed to set a lap time and, by having to stop out on track and not recovering to the pit lane, lost vital setup time ahead of qualifying later this afternoon.
There were no real dramas during the session although Valerio, Filippi and Razia all suffered from off-track excursions at the Circuit de Catalunya.
