Parente joins FC Porto in Superleague

03 September 2009

Alvaro Parente will be racing with the FC Porto team in the Superleague Formula's race meeting in Portugal this weekend. The Portuguese driver, replacing France's Tristan Gommendy, will join the team he supports on the pitch for two races at home on the back of his first GP2 win at Spa last weekend.

Having notched up Ocean Racing Technology's first GP2 race victory in Belgium on Saturday, Parente will travel to the Portimao circuit for the races in the Algarve in the championship which sees each entrant representing a football team.

"This will be a different challenge," said 24-year-old Parente ahead of his first attempt in the series which made its debut last year. "I don't know the championship or the car, something that will make my job harder during the weekend; however, as usual, I'll give my best and I'll try to achieve a good result."

Alvaro will be joining Sébastien Bourdais in the field, as the ousted Toro Rosso F1 driver also makes his first Superleague appearance. "I'm very happy to defend the Futebol Clube do Porto's colours," Parente added. "It has been my football team since I can remember.

"I think that Superleague is a good concept and I'm looking forward to driving the blue and white car. Besides, it's an opportunity to drive in Portugal, something that pleases me and hasn't happened since 2007."
