Torrential rain delays GP2 start at Monza

12 September 2009

The twenty Formula One drivers were fortunate to qualify before the GP2 race at Monza on Saturday as the previously forecasted heavy rain finally arrived at Monza. GP2's first race of the weekend has been significantly delayed as a result and still stands with a chance of being cancelled as the rain shows no signs of abating.

Blue skies and temperatures of 27°C (81°F) soon turned into a viewing nightmare for spectators at Monza as heavy and constant rain hit the circuit just minutes before the GP2 feature race was due to begin.

With the field waiting on the grid and FIA Safety Car still completing several reconnaissance laps, results show that the track - particularly the middle of the Ascari Chicane - is subject to huge amounts of standings water which threaten the race even taking place on the weekend Nico Hülkenberg could claim the GP2 crown.
